Hot Head Beanie Video Instructions

Things are about to get toasty! In this easy-to-follow tutorial, we’ll walk you through how to knit your Hot Head Beanie from start to finish – no experience needed, just your kit, some chill vibes, and maybe a snack or two.

This video is exclusively for Having A Yarn customers who’ve purchased the Hot Head Kit. Let’s turn that yarn into something hot (literally).

Jump to the Juicy Bits

Step 1: Start with a Slip Knot [00:05]

  • Create a slip knot and place it on your 10mm needle.
  • Gently pull the knot to tighten it on the needle.

Step 2: Cast On [01:03]

  • Cast on (CO) 42 stitches (st) onto the 10mm needle.

Step 3: Knit the First Row [05:51]

  • Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand.
  • For this row, alternate between knit 1 (K1) and purl 1 (P1) until you reach the end of the row
  • Tick off row 1.

Step 4: Knit 5 More Rows for Ribbing [11:39]

  • Repeat (rep) step 3 for the next 5 rows.
  • Keep starting each row with the stitches on the left-hand needle.
  • This will create a stretchy ribbed base for your beanie.
  • To keep track, tick off each row as you finish it.
  • At the end of this step, you’ll have knitted 6 rows total, completing the ribbed section

Step 5: Transition to Larger Needles [13:07]

  • Switch to 12mm needles.
  • Hold the 10mm needle with the stitches in your left hand and a 12mm needle in your right hand.
  • Complete the next step to transition to the larger needles

Step 6: Begin the Stockinette Stitch [13:26]

  • Now you’ll be working in a stitch pattern called Stockinette Stitch. This just means you’ll knit one row, then purl the next row, and repeat that over and over.
  • Knit (K) every stitch.
  • This completes row 7.

Step 7: Continue Knitting [15:32]

  • For row 8, purl (P) stitch all the way across.

Step 8: Repeat and Complete [17:33]

  • Repeat (rep) step 6 (knit row) and step 7 (purl row) until you’ve completed 26 rows total (including the ribbing completed in step 4).

Step 9: Decrease Stitches [20:53]

Now, we’ll reduce stitches so the top of the beanie isn’t bulky.

  • In Row 27, insert your right needle through the second stitch, then the first stitch on the left needle.
  • Knit them together (K1) - this decreases your stitches (st) from 42 to 41.
  • Repeat across the row, knitting two stitches together each time (K2tog).
  • By the end of the row, you’ll have 21 stitches (st) remaining.

Step 10: Continue Knitting [22:52]

  • For row 28, purl (P) stitches all the way across.

Step 11: Repeat the Decrease [23:29]

  • In row 29, we’ll decrease again using knit (K) stitches.
  • Insert your right needle through the second stitch, then the first stitch on the left needle.
  • Knit them together (K1), decreasing from 21 to 20 stitches.
  • Repeat (rep) across the row, knitting two stitches together each time.
  • By the end of the row, you’ll have 11 stitches (st) remaining.

Step 12: Cast Off [24:06]

  • Thread the yarn tail onto a darning needle.
  • One by one, transfer each stitch from the knitting needle onto the darning needle, starting with the stitch closest to the yarn tail.

Step 13: Close the Top of the Beanie [25:12]

  • With the darning needle still attached to the yarn tail, thread it through the stitch farthest from the tail to pull both sides together.
  • Gently pull the yarn to cinch the top into a tight circle.
  • For extra security, continue threading the darning needle through all the stitches around the opening.

Step 14: Seam the Sides Together [26:16]

  • To keep the seam invisible, follow the video instructions for this step.
  • (Trust us, it’s much easier to show than to explain!)

Step 15: Secure the Ends & Hide the Tail [33:02]

  • Tie a small, secure knot with the yarn tail to prevent unraveling.
  • Using a darning needle, weave the tail into the inside stitches of the beanie.
  • Trim any excess yarn - you’re done!
